Gauthier Toulemonde
-
Gauthier Toulemonde is known for being the first Web Robinson, a pioneer of remote working when he ran his press company from a desert island in 2013. Author of articles dedicated to explorers and adventurers, Gauthier has produced numerous reports, such as in Clipperton when he joined Jean-Louis Etienne, or aboard the Planetsolar, a trimaran that completed the first solar-powered circumnavigation of the globe in history. He spent 40 days in Indonesia with his animals, mainly a dog and two cats. Four years later, he ventured, again alone and for 40 days, into the Rub al-Khali desert with his dog Slooki. These expeditions are recounted in the book ‘De l'île déserte à la mer de sable’ (From Desert Island to Sea of Sand).
His new book, to be published in November 2025, recounts his latest solo expedition to the summit of a glacier:
- On the ridge line, alone at 3300 meters. (French)
When Gauthier Toulemonde decides to spend several weeks alone in a bivouac perched on the peaks of the Valais, he thinks he is escaping the hustle and bustle. Instead, he encountered life in all its intensity. As the days go by, isolation becomes a mirror: childhood, beloved ghosts, and the raw beauty of a starry sky emerge. Each step, each note, each silence carves out an ‘inner geography’ where the boundary between reality and imagination becomes blurred.
Sur la ligne de crête invites the reader to take a sensory and poetic plunge into the heights — at the crossroads of a mountain diary, an intimateessay and an adventure story.
In 2026, he will embark on a new expedition (and a new book!)
In the heart of the Pacific Ocean, a world-first experiment will take place.
French explorer and author Gauthier Toulemonde will live for 40 days on a deserted island in Palau, with only two companions: a dog and an artificial intelligence. This unprecedented project — Web Robinson: Alone with a Dog and an AI — will explore how humans can cope with isolation, supported only by nature, an animal companion, and a digital entity.
The expedition will combine science, literature, and philosophy, offering a fresh perspective on solitude, technology, and resilience in extreme environments. It will be following by
Scientific Committee
- Raphaël Domjan, Swiss solar pioneer (SolarStratos) – solar technology and logistics
- Pierre-Alain Crépon, psychologist (Switzerland) – behavioral analysis
- Patrick Schoettker, Professor of Medicine, Lausanne – remote medicine
- Christophe Haag, Professor at EM Lyon – emotional intelligence & cognition
Editorial Committee

This project is not survival for survival’s sake: it is a human experiment to understand how far technology can reshape our perception of solitude and companionship.
